BESTAO Consulting is currently looking for an experienced EU expert, consultancy or specialized service provider in Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to support a leading Chinese construction machinery manufacturer.

The client is interested in developing a robust methodology and conducting product-level carbon footprint assessments for construction machinery, with the intention of producing results comparable in scope and quality to product carbon footprint/LCA reporting published by leading European construction equipment manufacturers, such as Volvo Construction Equipment.

Scope of Expertise/Services Required

We are particularly interested in experts or organizations capable of supporting one or more of the following areas:

• Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculation for construction machinery;

• Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), including cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-grave assessments;

• definition of system boundaries, functional units and calculation methodologies;

• collection, verification and modelling of primary and secondary life-cycle data;

• calculation of carbon emissions associated with raw materials, components, manufacturing, transportation, use phase, servicing and end-of-life;

• Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant upstream/downstream Scope 3 emissions at product level;

• modelling of different electricity mixes and product-use scenarios;

• application of relevant European and international standards and methodologies, including ISO 14040/14044, ISO 14067 and other relevant Product Carbon Footprint/LCA methodologies;

• preparation of product-level LCA/Carbon Footprint reports suitable for international customers and markets;

• independent review or verification of the methodology and calculation results, where required; and

• advice on European regulatory and market expectations concerning product carbon footprint information for construction machinery.

Industry Experience

Experience in one or more of the following sectors would be particularly valuable:

• construction machinery and equipment;

• off-road mobile machinery;

• heavy machinery;

• automotive and commercial vehicles;

• electric vehicles or battery-powered industrial equipment; or

• other complex electromechanical products.

Practical experience conducting PCF/LCA projects for European machinery manufacturers or their supply chains would be highly desirable.

Reference

As an indication of the type of output the client is interested in, Volvo Construction Equipment has published product-level LCA/carbon footprint results for its electric wheel loaders, covering both cradle-to-gate emissions per machine and cradle-to-grave emissions per operating hour, including manufacturing, use and end-of-life phases.

The reference document can be provided to interested experts/service providers for further discussion.

Possible Cooperation Model

The assignment may be conducted remotely or through a combination of remote work and on-site support in China, depending on the proposed methodology and project requirements.

At this stage, BESTAO would welcome proposals from both individual experts and professional organizations.

Interested parties are kindly invited to provide:

company/expert profile and relevant qualifications;

• examples of previous Product Carbon Footprint/LCA projects, particularly in construction machinery or comparable industries;

• proposed methodology and approach;

• relevant standards, databases and LCA tools normally used;

• indicative project duration;

• information on deliverables;

• requirements for data collection from the Chinese manufacturer; and

• an indicative quotation.

For the quotation, please indicate separately, where applicable:

• methodology development / initial assessment;

• LCA/PCF calculation for the first selected product;

• additional cost per subsequent product/model;

• preparation of the final LCA/Carbon Footprint report;

• independent verification/review, if available;

• training or knowledge transfer to the client's internal team; and

• travel and on-site costs for work in China, if applicable.
