On 9 February 2021, the Ministry of Natural Resources issued a notice of promoting the research and development of processing technology and services for the confidentiality of geographic information(notice).The notice points out that the processing technology of the confidentiality of geographic information is the key technology to guarantee the security application of secret geographic information at present, and it is important for the sound development of geographic information industry.

The notice has clarified that the algorithms and parameters of processing technology of the confidentiality of geographic information recognized by the state are national secret. Geographic information processing technology should be used after the Ministry of Natural Resources obtains the confirmation from the commercial and military departments from National Administration for the Protection of State Secrets.

Using unidentifiable technologies (algorithms and parameters) to process the spatial location, precision, attribute of geographic information without permission will not change the original secret level of geographic information, and can not be used as the basis for determining and changing the secret level of geographic information, and decrypting the geographic information.

In the future, the Ministry of Natural Resources will establish a catalogue of processing technology of the confidentiality of geographic information, and the service units of processing technology of the confidentiality of geographic information in the catalogue shall provide free, timely, safe and reliable services in processing technology of confidentiality to the community and shall not refuse or delay their services if they don’t have proper reasons.
