MIIT Established TC on Internet of Things – JUN, 2025

On June 12, 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) announced the establishment of several standardization technical committees (TCs) and working groups (WG) under its management. The TC of Internet of Things (IoT) is included, and was given the TC number as MIIT/TC3.

Starting from the end of 2024, MIIT has started to establish its own TCs on key sectors, up to this date, besides the newly announced TCs and WG, two TC has already been founded: MIIT/TC1 on artificial intelligence, and MIIT/TC2 on pilot-scale test for manufacturing sectors.

MIIT/TC3 will be responsible for the formulation and revision of sector standards in areas such as application, key technologies, construction and operation and maintenance of the Internet of Things industry. The founding of this TC is expected to:

-   Promote the research and development and application of IoT standards

-   Build a strong, highly coordinated and technologically advanced IoT standard system

-   Promote the innovative development of the IoT industry and enhance its international competitiveness

MIIT/TC3 currently has 61 members, including:

-   Various associations from traditional sectors, such as machinery, iron and steel, petroleum and chemicals, construction materials, textile, etc.

-   National institutions: China Electronic Standardization Institute (CESI, where the TC3’s secretariat it at), China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), Electric Power Research Institute of Hubei Electric Power Co., Ltd. of National Grid etc.

-   Local enterprises: Hikvision, Huawei, Lenovo software, Xiaomi mobile software etc.

-   Universities: Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Beihang University etc.

For foreign stakeholders, the founding of MIIT/TC3 means another significant SDO shall involve in China’s standardization of IoT, and the fact that there are none MNC nor foreign invested enterprise are in the TC as members, may require further observation and attention on the TC’s next steps and working results so as to avoid potential compliance risks.
