Working Meeting Reveals China’s Focus Points on Ecology and Environment Management – JAN, 2025

On January 14 and 15, 2025, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China (MEE) held the National Working Meeting on Ecology and Environmental Protection 2025 in Beijing (hereinafter referred to as “the Working Meeting”). It is a key event for the regulator to summarize the work of 2024, and most importantly, assigning the working focus of 2025 on the national level. All key leaders of MEE and those from provincial levels attended the Working Meeting. 

Working principles

·  Advance eco-civilization reforms and ensure their effective implementation, strengthening the system and its practical application.

·  Enhance practical engagement by focusing on the needs and solutions proposed by businesses and the public, ensuring initiatives are actionable and responsive.

· Optimize current management systems by institutionalizing proven practices and measures into sustainable, long-term mechanisms.

· Integrate ecological and environmental protection efforts with broader economic development goals, while precisely identifying regional challenges and key factors impacting environmental protection.

·  Improve decision-making by adopting scientific approaches, respecting natural and objective laws, and establishing evidence-based management strategies.

Eight Working focus of 2025

-   Further optimize basic system and governance system on ecology management, and the mechanism on green and low carbon

-   Systematically plan relevant work for the 15th Five-year Plan, and intensify implementation of existing works.

-   Further strengthen pollution prevention and control. Innovatively carry out the management on solid waste and new pollutant.

-   Continue to drive the high-quality of green and low carbon development; reinforce environmental assessments for major planning and projects. Further develop national carbon market.

-   Reinforce the unified supervision on ecological restoration and protection, maintain national ecological safety.

-   Coordinately carry out environmental supervision on ecological systems in rivers and regions.

-   Further propel the construction of scientific innovation and supervision system, implement digital and intelligent transition for the ecology and environment supervision network.

-   Optimize regulation, standard and policy systems for ecology and environment; promote international cooperation

China have been making continuous efforts on its carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, in which all industrial sectors and communities are involved.
