On January 9 and 10, 2025, the Quantum Information Standards Working Group (SAC/TC28/WG34, hereinafter referred to as “WG34”) of the National Information Technology Standardization Technical Committee convened its first plenary meeting in Beijing. Representatives from 84 organizations, including the Department of Science and Technology of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), and the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), among 33 other entities, gathered to discuss the development path for quantum information standardization.
The meeting reviewed the major accomplishments of 2024, highlighting the WG34’s support in finalizing quantum information industry policies and advancing the standardization roadmap along with key standard developments.
Specifically, four standard subgroups of WG34 reported on their progress:
· The Fundamental Topics Subgroup discussed the Research Report on Quantum Information Standardization Roadmap and examined a new standard proposal named Neutral Atom Qubit Coherence Time Testing Methods.
· The Technical Topics Subgroup deliberated two standard proposals: Functional Requirements for Serverless Quantum Computing Application Service Platforms and Cross-Platform Standardized Description Protocol for Quantum Computing Visual Programming.
· The Application Topics Subgroup focused on discussions around two research reports: Frontier Exploration and Application of Quantum Artificial Intelligence Algorithms and Standardization Roadmap for Quantum Information Technology Application Fields.
· The Product Topics Subgroup exchanged views and discussed the Research Report on the Standard System Architecture for Quantum Information-Related Products.
The meeting approved the Research Report on Quantum Information Standardization Roadmap and engaged in in-depth discussions on the diversified applications of "Quantum+."
Following discussions and research by the attending experts, WG34 will focus on improving the standard system architecture, deepening the development of key technology standards, promoting the implementation and application of standards, and strengthening international standardization cooperation. Notably, the meeting emphasizes the work to establish a comprehensive quality evaluation system covering technology development, product verification, and application promotion, and to perform quantum information professional evaluation.
For foreign stakeholder, WG34 is very likely to play crucial role for China’s quantum standardization system on quantum information, together with the SAC/TC578 whose focus is on quantum computing and quantum metrology.
